All van and van lovers know that the tailgate to the living area of their vehicle can be a great asset but also a source of problems.

The generously sized opening certainly makes it easy to get on board even with bulky objects in your hands, but its closing can be very noisy. If you don’t calculate the forward thrust well, you almost always end up slamming it.

Now that vans and panel vans are particularly popular, there is a risk of disturbing more than just a few neighbours at quiet times in crowded parking areas. There is also another side effect that could be described as physiatric. To close the tailgate from the inside, one is often forced to make a movement that can be annoying, if not downright painful.

The solution
high-end or very high-end vehicles are sometimes equipped with semi- or fully-automatic electric locks. And for everyone else? German company AST-technikmodellbau, a small but dynamic company from Baden-Württemberg, has come up with an efficient locking system for the sliding doors of vans and vans.

The AST does not require any modifications or minor alterations to the vehicle on which it is installed. Only four holes have to be drilled for attaching the mechanism and a slot in the kitchen cabinet. Incidentally, the AST does not interfere in any way with the vehicle’s standard locking system.

Even in the event of a malfunction or power failure, the door can always be closed and locked normally. The AST’ASTè consists of only two parts, a plate attached to the original hinge that simply needs to be adjusted, and the module with the motor and locking mechanism that is attached to the inside. The weight è is less than one and a half kilograms and the maximum power consumption è is 60 watts, with a maximum draw of approximately 4A.

Fail-safe system:

Even in the event of a malfunction or power failure, manual closing and locking remains possible.

The removable bracket is easily attached to the original hinge without the need for additional drilling.

The motor housing is fitted with just four new holes.

The protective cover prevents the entry of insects and dirt.
